Strasbourg has a tradition of bridging cultures. Since the 12th Century, the city was the meeting place of French and Germanic culture, now the Strasbourg hosts the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. The Grande Île, Strasbourg's historic centre, is famed for its Medieval buildings, especially the 12th Century Notre Dame Cathedral and for a relatively small city, Strasbourg has more than its fair share of museums and art galleries.
Strasbourg is located in the Rhine Valley, on the Lll River where it enters the Rhine. It is the capital of the Alsace Region and just over 3km East of the French / German border. The city enjoys low precipitation and the summers can be very warm. Due to Strasbourg's strategic position on the Rhine, the city is the seat of the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine and the Port of Strasbourg is the second largest on the river after Duisburg in Germany.
